On January 14, 2006 I was crowned Miss Oscar Smith High School 2006. A senior at the high school, I was tremendously honored to win the title! That was my second year competing for Miss Oscar Smith; the year before I had placed first-runner-up. The Miss Oscar Smith High School pageant is very special to me because it was the first pageant that I ever participated in.
The theme for that year's pageant was "Smith Salutes the Silver Screen", and the contestants performed in a Broadway-styled opening number. Entertainment for the event included the Oscar Smith High School Star Dancers and vocal selections by Emily Hasty (Miss Preteen Chesapeake 2005 and Miss Virginia's Outstanding Preteen 2006) and Miss Oscar Smith 2005 Melody Waters.
City Councilman Cliff Hayes and Darla Lacey (Mrs. Virginia-America 2007) served as emcees. There were 11 contestants in the pageant, and we competed in personal interview, talent, and evening gown.

After being crowned, my family and I went out to eat. As we were seated, I glanced out of the window and was surprised to see it was snowing. It is not unusual to see snow in January, but that was the only day that winter that it snowed!!!
My family and I still talk about how the snow confirmed that it was truly a special night. With my first title, I felt empowered to continue with pageantry. Thank goodness I did.
